FIELD: non-ferrous electrical metallurgy; monitoring vacuum arc melting processes of high-reaction metals, such as titanium. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes revealing of damage due to fusion of electrode holder or misalignment of electrode. Proposed method includes also recording of image of section of molten metal pool, measurement of rate of change of area of this section and noting damage in case of deviation of rate being measured from threshold magnitude. Recording of image of section of molten metal pool is performed in region of spectrum free from arc plasma radiation, in infra-red region for example. Measurement of rate of change of area of image is performed by use of one fourth of area of molten metal pool. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency. 2 cl, 1 dwg
