FIELD: metallurgy; particularly, production of billets in continuous casting machines. SUBSTANCE: method of forecasting quality of billet being cast in continuous casting machine containing roller apparatus incorporates steps of creation of standardized continuous casting process technology in the form of appropriate coefficients, set-up values, functional dependence, based on chemical composition and temperature of metal, sizes of billet and number of heat in series. This method also includes monitoring and recording deviations from standardized process technology, forecasting quality of cast billet depending upon quantity of deviations, their types and values. Mistakes of forecast are revealed and divided into two types, and decreased. In so doing coefficients, set-up values and functional dependence are changed in such a way, that mistake of forecast of first type becomes mistake of forecast of second type, while mistake of forecast of second type becomes mistake of forecast of first type. Proportion of mistakes prior to change and after change is determined. Then in accordance with their relationship with due consideration for character of functional dependence between actual and assumed billet defect and changed coefficients, set-up values or dependence these coefficients, set-up values or dependence are corrected based on relationship as follows: ΔXi = M•(PB/PA)•F(xi) where ΔXi is value of correction of corresponding i coefficient, i set-up value or functional dependence; M is degree of influence of parameter Xi on certain type of defect; PB is proportion of mistakes prior to change of coefficients, set-up values or dependence; PA is proportion of mistakes after change of coefficients, set-up values or dependence; F(xi) is functional which coordinates parameter Xi and its influence on certain type of defect.
