FIELD: mechanical engineering; heat treatment of steel articles by concentrated source of energy. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes volume hardening of articles followed by high-energy induction heating of cutting edges at frequency of 440 kHz and specific power of 5-10 kW/sq cm continued for 1-2 s with main mass of metal of tool cold; heated edges are cooled with water at initial pressure of 2-2.5 atm. EFFECT: reduced power requirements; improved quality of tools. 1 tbl
