FIELD: measuring equipment. SUBSTANCE: the invention presents a method to define value of hydrocarbon fuels detonation stability. The invention is dealt with the field of the measuring equipment. The method provides for making measurements of electrooptical characteristics - refractive index n or dielectric permeability ε of hydrocarbon fuels with known values of the detonation stability, the subsequent statistical analysis of the results and measurement of n or ε the being explored hydrocarbon fuel. For hydrocarbon fuels with known values of the detonation stability and for the being explored fuels additionally measure a the value of the linear magnetic double refraction, expressed in respect to magnetic double refraction of individual benzol - a magnetooptical benzene index, and according to a calibration relationship it is possible to determine an octane or a cetane number. Technical result an increase of reliability and cost-effectiveness of an optical system. EFFECT: increased reliability and cost-effectiveness of an optical system. 2 dwg
