FIELD: railway transport; auxiliary railway facilities.
SUBSTANCE: invention is designed for reduction of car speed on gravity humps and it can be used in weight-type rail car retarders. Proposed rail car retarder includes brake beams furnished with brake blocks hinge-connected with rail installed for vertical displacement and connected through intermediate members with drive link of articulated parallelogram mechanism interacting with power cylinder. Car retarder includes also base. Intermediate members are made in form of links hinge-connected by ends with brake beams. Drive link of articulated parallelogram mechanism is arranged under base, being fixed link of articulated parallelogram mechanism whose hinge-joint are arranged at angle of 0°<α<90° to base. Housing of single-acting power cylinder is hinge-secured on stationary support.
EFFECT: reduced contact stresses in mating of brake beams with intermediate members, provision of return of car retarder in initial position under brake beam gravity force.
