FIELD: mechanical engineering.

SUBSTANCE: method of predicting wear resistance is performed by means of selected initial parameter - meaning of sonic speed measured for polyoxide structures - films which form onto surface of hard-alloy cutting tools under influence of temperature and duration of their oxidizing heating which equals to temperature of cutting and duration of operation of the tools till preset degree of dullness. Method is based onto conduction of standard wear resistance tests during process of cutting materials at speed of cutting being optimal or close to optimal one, onto conduction of tests of change in speed of sound from properties of surface polyoxide structure formed during process of heating at surface of hard-alloy cutting tool under temperatures being equal to average temperature in area of cutting, onto creation of standard correlation relation which includes "wear resistance - initial parameter" criteria for specific temperatures of duration of cutting and heating. Also current statistic control is performed to find value of initial parameter for any lot of hard-alloy cutting tools and wear resistance is predicted for the lot on the base of the parameter. Wear resistance grows at increase in speed of sound.
