FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy; preparation of carnallite raw material for electrolysis.
SUBSTANCE: the invention is pertaining to the field of nonferrous metallurgy, in particular to the methods of preparation of the carnallite raw material for the process of electrolysis to produce metallic magnesium. The method of preparation of carnallite for electrolysis includes melting of the dehydrated firm carnallite, its treatment with a chlorinating agent and a direct electric current. The process is conducted under an excess pressure of 1-200 Pa, at the temperature of the process - 410-500° C, consumption of direct current of 6-8 A h/kg, the share of magnesium chloride - more than 45 % and the share of magnesium oxide in the dehydrated carnallite - 0.15 %. The invention ensures improvement of quality of the finished product due to a decrease in a carnallite of the share of a magnesium oxide and metallic admixtures and intensification of the process.
EFFECT: the invention ensures improvement of quality of the finished product, decreased share of a magnesium oxide and metallic admixtures in carnallite, intensification of the process.
