FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, namely preparation of chlorine-magnesium containing raw material (carnallite) for production of magnesium by electrolysis.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of dehydrating carnallite in solid state; melting and simultaneously partially dehydrating it by means of gases containing hydrogen chloride; overheating melt and agitating it by means of inert gas; settling solid impurities from melt and realizing electrolysis process; before settling subjecting dehydrated melt of carnallite to electrochemical refining due to continuous treatment of melt by means of direct electric current while periodically changing polarity of direct current electrodes; sustaining electric current density in range 0.1 - 0.4 A/sq.cm; keeping melt temperature at direct current treatment of melt in range 500 -700 C; changing electrode polarity once in hour.
EFFECT: increased electric current yield of magnesium due to lowered content of impurity of sulfate-ion andiron in dehydrated carnallite, lowered cost of preparation of raw material for electrolysis.
