FIELD: production of iron and/or ferroalloys.
SUBSTANCE: melting is performed in metallurgical reservoir which is provided with hearth, side walls and roof; minimum width of inner space of hearth is at least 4 m. Starting materials which are just solid material and carrier gas are blown into molten metal and slag pool through three or more lances extending downward, thus generating the gas flow. Gas flow causes formation of widened zone of molten metal pool raising splashes, sprays and jets of molten material from this zone. Oxygen-containing gas is blown in area of reservoir and combustible gases are subjected to afterburning. Widened zone of molten metal pool includes raised area around blowing area of oxygen-containing gas between this area and side walls. Splashes, sprays and jets of molten material rise from raised area forming curtain around blowing area of oxygen-containing gas between this area and side walls, thus wetting the side walls. "Free" space is formed around lower end of lance or each lance for forming the oxygen-containing gas; concentration of molten material in this area is lower as compared with widened zone.
EFFECT: optimization of afterburning of combustible gases; possibility of creating high rates of transfer of heat; reduced thermal losses of reservoir.
