FIELD: electrical engineering; boost charge of batteries using pulse-width modulated charge-discharge converters.

SUBSTANCE: as soon as storage battery is connected to device, its type is automatically defined and charge algorithm is chosen to suit this type of battery. Device also has given algorithm control circuit and power section control circuit. Control unit in the form of single-chip microprocessor functions to generate signals in compliance with charge algorithm to control high-frequency pulse-width modulated converters. Signal picked off current sensor is passed to single-chip microprocessor and the latter sets and maintains desired level of charge and discharge currents in compliance with charge algorithm. Signal arriving from voltage sensor of storage battery is applied to single-chip microprocessor to monitor charging process and to evaluate end-of-charge criterion. This device is designed for boost charge of ventilated half-sealed or completely sealed NiCd and NiMH batteries as well as Li-Ion batteries rated at voltage higher than, equal to, or lower than supply voltage of device using same components in charge and discharge current circuits.

EFFECT: reduced quantity of power circuit parts and power section volume, enhanced efficiency and enlarged functional capabilities of device.
