FIELD: electrical engineering; battery charging with asymmetric current and with direct current using charge-discharge pulse-width modulated converters; charging sealed batteries.
SUBSTANCE: battery connection to device automatically defines its type and selects algorithm and method for its charging in compliance with battery type. Proposed device designed for charging NiCd and NiMH storage batteries rated at voltage higher than, equal to, or lower than voltage across power supply has control circuit using desired algorithm and power section control circuit. Control unit in the form of single-chip microprocessor generates signals in compliance with charge algorithm to control high-frequency PWM converters. Storage battery is connected to charge PWM converter to function as load and at the same time as power supply for PWM converter. Signal picked off current sensor is supplied to single-chip microprocessor and the latter specifies and maintains charge and discharge currents at desired level in compliance with charge algorithm. Signal picked off battery voltage sensor is supplied to single-chip microprocessor to monitor charging process and to evaluate end-of-charge criteria.
EFFECT: enlarged functional capabilities of device due to ability of charging battery with standard direct current including its pre-charge.
