SUBSTANCE: invention relates to engines used to power road vehicles. According to proposed method fuel is injected into combustion chamber of internal combustion engine at first mode of operation at compression stroke, and at second mode of operation at intake stroke and change over between said modes if provided by changing internal combustion engine from operation at one mode for operation at another mode. Internal combustion engine is furnished with exhaust gas recirculation system with check valve. With check valve seized or wedged in open position, internal combustion engine is changed over to operation at first mode. Engine control unit is used in this method.
EFFECT: provision of engine control method excluding change over for operation under intolerable conditions in case of troubles or failures in exhaust gas recirculation system.
