SUBSTANCE: invention relates to preparing carotinoid pigments. The new strain Xantophyllomyces dendrorhous BKM Y-2911D as a producer of astaxanthine is prepared from a natural isolate identified as Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous Golubev and selected in media with inhibitors of carotene synthesis by mutagenesis method and by treatment with nitrosuguanidine and methanesulfanate. The strain shows capacity for producing large amounts of biomass with the high content of astaxanthine. For preparing high productivity of the strain nutrient media usually used in industrial technologies can be used.
