FIELD: treating surfaces of metallic articles in metallurgical industry, namely descaling, subjecting them to heat treatment or modifying article surface.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of placing electrode near article for forming closed discharge gap; igniting discharge and increasing electric current of electric arc till achieving uniform distribution of elemental discharges on electrode and on article surface embraced by said electrode; exciting running magnetic fields along the whole inter-electrode space at back side of article. Apparatus for performing the method includes electrode, magnetic system, power supply source for electric arc connected to electrode and to article; electromagnets and magnetic cores. Working surface of electrode is equally spaced from article surface and windings of electromagnets of running magnetic field are arranged at back side of article surface and they are uniformly distributed along electrode and along article surface.
EFFECT: lowered power consumption, reduced cost price of electric arc treatment of article surface, improved quality of article surface, prevention of superheating of article.
