FIELD: analytical methods.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to determination of copper in process solutions, mineral acids, natural and man-made waters. In a method of determining copper, comprising provision of copper(II) solution, transfer thereof into complex compound with sorbent, and measurement of diffusion reflection coefficient, said sorbent is silica gel chemically modified with mercaptopropyl groups. To that end, sorbent loaded with sorbed copper is treated by 1·10-5-1·10-4 M solution of Michler thioketone in 40-60% aqueous ethyl alcohol and diffusion reflection coefficient of surface copper(I) complex is measured at 540 nm. Coloration intensity and diffusion reflection coefficient values are constant when above-indicated Michler thioketone solution is utilized.
EFFECT: lowered detection threshold of copper and extended copper determination range.
