FIELD: analytical chemistry of elements, namely, methods for detecting ruthenium, possible use for detecting ruthenium in geological and industrial materials.

SUBSTANCE: method for detecting ruthenium includes preparation of ruthenium IV solution in hydrochloric acid, separation of ruthenium IV from solution by sorbent - chemically modified silica gel, restoration of it to ruthenium III and its transition to complex compound on the surface of sorbent, separation of sorbent from solution, measurement of diffusion reflection coefficient at 580 nm and estimation of ruthenium content using calibrating graph, as sorbent, silica gel is used, chemically modified by mercaptopropyl groups, while separation of ruthenium from solution is performed at 95°C. The essence of method is that ruthenium IV in broad range of concentration of hydrochloric acid is numerically (extraction percentage is 99,0-99,9%) extracted by silica gel, chemically modified by mercaptopropyl groups. During sorption of ruthenium IV its restoration to ruthenium III occurs, and on the surface of sorbent blue-colored compounds of ruthenium III with mercaptopropyl groups surface, in covalent manner held on the surface of silica gel, having maximum in diffusion reflection spectrum at 580 nm. Sorption in static mode (during intensive agitation of sorbent) at 95° occurs sufficiently quickly (time needed for stabilization of sorption balance does not exceed 10 minutes) and numerically (distribution coefficient reaches 1·104 cm3/g).

EFFECT: simplification of technology, decreased detection limits.
