METHOD AND UNIT FOR PRE-STORAGE OR PRE-BURIAL TREATMENT OF SPENT FILTERS Russian patent published in 2007 - IPC G21F9/36 

FIELD: recovery of radioactive wastes.

SUBSTANCE: proposed method for pre-storage or pre-burial treatment of spent filters polluted by radionuclides includes compression of filter elements separated from filter casing. Mentioned filter is pre-mounted in portable chamber which is disposed on vehicle above container designed for their storage or burial and placed in definite position relative to this chamber. Filter elements are pushed into container and compressed in single pass of compressing facility. Proposed unit for pre-storage or pre-burial treatment of spent filters has workstations for charging spent filters, separating filter elements from filter casing, compressing and packing filter elements. This unit is equipped with compression device whose working element moves vertically. It also has portable chamber whose bottom part accommodates guide skirt. Hole is provided in chamber bottom for passing compression device working element and sleeves are disposed around this hole on bottom underside. Intermediate slab of press mounts guides for positioning portable chamber relative to compressing element of press.

EFFECT: reduced amount of radioactive wastes due to their compact isolation within container.
