FIELD: metallurgy; modifying, refining and alloying of ferrous metals.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method consists in partial reduction of iron oxide materials and preliminary cooling of these materials by reducing gases escaping from melting zone at temperature of 800-1000°C. Partially reduced material is fed to melting zone for melting it at high-temperature heating for final reduction. Final reduction of iron oxide materials is performed by plasma jets at introduction of carbon-containing fuel and oxygen-containing gas. Plasma sources are mounted in form of plasmatrons which are opposite over reactor perimeter and are mounted at angle of 30-50° relative to level in way of reactor hearth. Longitudinal axes of symmetry of plasmatrons cross on reactor axis and lie in one plane with vertex of angle of plasmatron axes which is located above preset surface of metal.
EFFECT: improved quality of metal at low level of admixtures; reduced power requirements; minimization of effect on surrounding medium.
