FIELD: special electrometallurgy, namely vacuum electric arc refining of highly reactive metals and alloys, possibly at melting ingots of titanium alloys.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of providing stable diffusion electric arc burning after igniting arc in vacuum for 10 - 15 min; correcting length of arc gap according to minimum value for sustaining stable electric arc discharge; filling furnace with argon till working pressure at rate 2 - 4 Hg mm/min. At final stage of melting before mode for taking out shrink holes in order to eliminate occurring of abnormal discharge, argon pressure in furnace is lowered till 2.5 - 5.0 Hg mm and mode of taking out shrink holes at such pressure is realized.
EFFECT: less loss of metal yield due to enhanced quality of melted ingots, explosion-proof process, lowered expenses for melting ingots.
