FIELD: investigating or analyzing of materials.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises probing material with pulse laser irradiation and recording ultrasonic waves generated by heat induced by laser radiation. The optical radiation is readjusted in infrared and visible band by increasing the frequency from pulse to pulse. When acoustic response arises, the optical readjustment stops. The material of inhomogeneity is determined from the frequency of the laser radiation, and the sizes and shape of the inhomogeneity are determined from the shape of the acoustic pulse.
EFFECT: enhanced precision.
