FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: metallic iron granules are made in furnace provided with rotary hearth by reduction smelting of compacts including material containing carbon-bearing reductant and material containing metal oxide. Metallic iron granules contain at least 94 mass-% of Fe, 1.0-4.5 of C; their diameter ranges from 1 to 30 mm as adjusted by of compacts and/or density of loading the compacts on furnace hearth. Granules are obtained by heating and reducing the metal oxide in compacts in solid state followed by heating the reduced metal in reducing atmosphere for carbonizing and melting the reduced iron and making it possible to form granules at avoidance of slag byproduct. Amount of carbon-bearing reductant in compacts is so adjusted that residual content of carbon ranges from 1.5 to 5.0 mass-% at 100-% metallizing after reduction by heating.
EFFECT: enhanced efficiency.
