FIELD: metallurgy; methods of production of metallic iron. SUBSTANCE: according to one version of invention, method includes heating molded initial material containing ferric oxide and oxidant in reducing melting furnace, reduction in solid state, carburization of reduced iron and coalescence of liquid metallic iron to granulated metallic iron; gas medium available near molded initial material at carburization and melting stages possesses reducing ability not below 0.5. According to another version, proposed method includes forming deposited layer on refractory material of hearth which contains slag for protection of hearth. Device proposed for loading auxiliary initial material on hearth of reducing melting furnace includes supply pipe line which is connected in vertical position with furnace crown.
