FIELD: physics; nuclear technology.
SUBSTANCE: present invention pertains to the ecology of atomic energy, in particular, to cleaning air streams, including ventilation systems of atomic power stations, containing radioactive iodine. The method cleaning air from gaseous compounds of radioactive iodine involves trapping the compounds using sorption-filtration materials. The air stream containing radioactive iodine before the sorption-filtration materials, is mixed with ammonia first and the gas mixture is ionised. The preferred concentration of ammonia lies within the range from 0.1 to 30.0 g/m3. The gas mixture is preferably ionised using ultraviolet radiation and/or an electroarc discharger and/or corona discharge with ionisation potential of 3-25 volts.
EFFECT: higher degree (efficiency) of purity of air and process gases from hardly sorbable gaseous fractions of radioactive iodine, especially (HIO), at high humidity, using existing sorption-filtration materials.
