FIELD: physics; measurement.

SUBSTANCE: present invention pertains to measurement technology and can be used for checking fuel remaining in vehicle tanks, for measuring fuel used for a specific journey, as well as for checking the filling level of fuel in tanks at filling stations. There is no need for keeping the vehicle in a strict horizontal position. Three measurements are taken in three different predefined directions of movement of the probe of the device and three different points of contact with the surface of the fuel are obtained. From these points, it can be considered that, the tank is inclined to the horizontal, and the amount of remaining fuel can be determined. This is made possible by that, the invention employs a contact sensor besides the probe. The contact sensor is made from a probe, consisting of a pipe and a pressure sensor, located at the free end of the pipe. There is also a guide for movement of the probe relative the tank inlet. Measurements are taken from the inlet of the tank to the surface of the fuel.

EFFECT: simplification of checking fuel remaining in vehicle fuel tanks.
