SUBSTANCE: present invention pertains to communication and can be used in wireless communication systems. The method and device for determining communication data transfer rate on a communication return line of an access terminal involve receiving a return activity bit (RAB) from the access point in a communication system and transfer of the RAB to a digital filter, so as to obtain filtered RAB. The data transfer rate of the return line is determined based on the filtered value of the RAB. The processor at the access terminal can also determine whether the access terminal is in idle mode, and sends the value of the empty state of the RAB to the digital filter, when the access terminal is idle mode. The filtered RAB can be compared with a threshold value so as to establish a mode for determining the data transfer rate of the communication return line. The mode determines a set of criteria of the level of intensity of increase or decrease of the data transfer rate on the communication return line. Therefore, the processor determines the data transfer rate based on the filtered RAB in accordance with the established mode.

EFFECT: adaptive determination of the data transfer rate for fast increase of data transfer altogether with minimisation of undesirable effects.
