FIELD: physics; measurement.
SUBSTANCE: proposed invention relates to mechanical engineering and is meant for determining residual stress when using strengthening techniques through surface plastic deformation so as to increase fatigue resistance of complex loaded components. The method of determining residual stress in the material of the component involves fastening a model of the component, made in form of rectangular plates, to a non-metallic base, strengthening the material of the model through surface plastic deformation, removal of the model from the base, measurement of the flexure of the model and determination of the residual stress values in the material of the model, based on the measured flexure. Values of residual stress in the material of the model are also measured after strengthening and before removing the model from the base. Values of residual stress in the material of the model are determined using a non-destructive testing method. Final values of residual stress in the material of the model are determined from residual stress values measured before and after removal of the model from the base.
EFFECT: more accurate measurement of residual stress, as well as longer service life and reliability of components during operation due to defined distribution of residual strain on the whole cross section of the component.
