FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to graphite electrodes for carbothermic reduction of aluminium and a method of their manufacture. The graphite electrode in the furnace for aluminium production by means of carbothermic reduction of alumina contains a moulded graphite body of the electrode and a coating on the electrode body restricting permeability of CO into the electrode up to 10-6 cm2/sec maximum and being essentially water insoluble. In essence the coating moderately increases resistance of the electrode body in the area of the electrode grip, the coating does not pollute the melt in the furnace containing alumina, aluminium carbide, carbon and carbon monoxide and represents the coating obtained by thermal decomposition and made of pyrolytic carbon, glass carbon or resin carbonised at a high temperature. A method of electrode manufacture has been described.
EFFECT: prevention of leakage of the pressurised gaseous components from the furnace, compaction of the electrode surface and energy loss reduction.
