FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to graphite electrodes for aluminium production by means of carbothermic reduction of alumina. Graphite electrodes for aluminium production by means of carbothermic reduction of alumina preferably can be either immersed into the molten bath in the low-temperature chamber or be installed vertically on the lateral walls of the high-temperature chamber. The electrodes are made preferably using a mixture of coke pieces with a full range of sizes from essentially 25 um to essentially 3 mm and preferably using high-intensity mixer for effective spreading of resin on all coke pieces. The electrodes can have flexural strength at break of at least 20 N/mm2.
EFFECT: when using the full continuous range of particle sizes in conjunction with mixing with a high-intensity mixer the geometrical packing of the particles can be greatly improved, therefore it can increase the density of the material and thus a higher mechanical strength can be achieved as well as electrical conduction can be improved as compared to ordinary graphite electrodes.
