FIELD: sulfur production. SUBSTANCE: method consists in passing H2S-containing gas combined with O2-containing one at O2/H2S molar ratio 0.5-3 (advantageously, 0.5-1.5) through H2S oxidation catalyst at temperatures below 200 C. Catalyst contains activated carbon as carrier to which catalytic phase is added selected from the group including oxides, salts, or sulfides of V, Mo, W, Ni, or Co, or a mixture thereof, quantity of indicated catalytic phase, expressed as transition metal weight, constituting 0.1-15% (advantageously, 0.5-5%) weight of calcined catalyst. Gas-catalyst contact time is 0.5-20 s and contact temperature 60 to 180 C. Elementary sulfur formed upon H2S oxidation is deposited on catalyst. The latter is periodically regenerated being blown through by oxidant-free gas at 200 to 500 C. EFFECT: enhanced process efficiency. 10 cl
