FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of producing 3-hydroxyremantadin which has a wide range of biological activity and is used in prevention and early treatment of influenza. Presence of a hydroxyl group in the adamantane nucleus reduces toxicity and widens the range of antiviral effect. The production method involves oxidation (hydroxylation) of remantadin hydrochloride using hypobromous acid HOBr which, under reaction conditions, is generated in situ from bromo-trichloro methane CBrCl3 and H2O under the effect of Mo(CO)6. The process is carried out at temperature 140-160°C for 6-10 hours with molar ratio [remantadin hydrochloride]:[CBrCl3] [Mo(CO)6]:[H2O]=100:100: 5:2000÷4000. Under optimum conditions with 90-99% remantadin conversion, the only product of the reaction is 3-hydroxyremantadin hydrochloride.
EFFECT: method ensures high output and quality of the product.
