SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of producing 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine, which is realised via synthesis of the end product from 5-methyl-2- propionyl furan when reacted with an aqueous solution of ammonia in the presence of a catalyst at high pressure and temperature and purification of the obtained technical 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine by transferring it into an aqueous solution with addition of hydrochloric acid to pH not greater than 3.0, subsequent salting out of 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine hydrochloride from its aqueous solution using sodium chloride.
