SUBSTANCE: method involves steps for reducing the terminal monosaccharide link of sialic acid to obtain a reduced monosaccharide link of sialic acid, hydrolysis of the saccharide to obtain a hydrolysate containing monosaccharide links. The saccharide contains monosaccharide links of sialic acid which are α 2→9 bonded, and a terminal monosaccharide link of sialic acid. Further, the ratio of the total amount of sialic acid to amount of the reduced sialic acid in the hydrolysate is determined. The invention enables to measure the degree of polymerisation of saccharides and evaluation of the quality of vaccines which contain saccharides.
EFFECT: high accuracy and reliability of the method.
