FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, and aims at the noninvasive estimation of functioning liver pulp dimension in the patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Total serum protein (TP) is measured. Liver size is measured by an ultrasound technique. The Dr and Dl values, i.e. diametres of the relative spheres of the right and left lobes of liver are calculated by the given formula. A functioning liver pulp dimension index (FLPDI) is calculated by formula: FLPDI=(π×Dr3/6+π×Dl3/6)/TP, where Dr is the diametre of a relative sphere of the right lobe of liver, cm, Dl is the diametre of a relative sphere of the left lobe of liver, cm, TP is total serum protein, g/l. If the FLPDI being less than 30 cm3/g×l provides a favourable prognosis for the portosystemic shunt placement, while the FLPDI exceeding 30 cm3/g×l is a contra-indication for the portosystemic shunt placement.
EFFECT: method allows higher accuracy and reliability of cirrhosis and portal hypertension diagnosis, noninvasive determinations of indications and contra-indications for the portosystemic shunt placement.
