SUBSTANCE: input image is broken into several image units (600), containing multiple image elements (610). Image units (600) are coded to produce coded representations (700) of units, colour weights are assigned to image elements (610) in unit (600) in process of coding. At least two colour code words (710, 720, 730, 740) are determined at least partially on the basis of colour weights. These code words (710, 720, 730, 740) are representations at least of two colour values. Initial colours of image elements (610) are represented by colour representations produced from combinations of at least two colour values weighed with the help of assigned colour weights.

EFFECT: provision of efficient processing of image units with slowly changing transitions between two or more colours.
