FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: cold cathode consists of a current-conducting solid body where a graphite film with thickness between one and six atomic layers is placed parallel the surface of said solid body at a distance of 0.1 mm. The graphite film is held on dielectric particles having electric strength of 108-109 V/m lying on the surface of the solid body. Metal gauze on a non-conducting holder is placed parallel the graphite film over its outer surface. Leads are connected the solid body, film and gauze. Voltage is applied between the graphite film and the solid body. Autoelectronic emission current arises from the surface of the solid body under the effect of the electric field with average strength of 108 V/m. Efficiency of the cold cathode (ratio of emission current to current in the solid body-graphite film space) is equal to 0.90-0.99.
EFFECT: obtaining a stream of free electrons with high density of emission current up to 100kA/cm2.
