FIELD: physics, radio.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to systems for detecting objects by reflecting radio waves from the surface of said objects and can be used in radio location to detect a range-extended target. The technical result is achieved due to possibility of detecting a range-extended target by measuring duration of a signal reflected from a target τ0, determining the increase in duration of the reflected signal Δτ=τ0-τp, where τp is duration of the probing signal, determining the ratio β=Δτ0/τp, where β≥0.01 indicates a range-extended target and β < 0.01 indicates a point target. The device which realises said method has a transmitter, an antenna switch, an antenna, a receiver and a detection channel connected in a certain way. The transmitter has a modulator, a microwave oscillator and a first switch; the detection channel has a first delay line, a second switch, a mixer, an intermediate frequency amplifier, a signal duration measuring device, a subtractor, a divider and a threshold device. Components of the transmitter and the detection channel are connected to each other and the rest of the components of the detector in a certain way.
