SUBSTANCE: invention relates to systems for detecting an object by reflecting radio waves from its surface. The technical result is achieved due to possibility of detecting an angular-coordinate extended target by measuring the antenna beam width ΘA is a target ΘT is present, determining the increase in the antenna beam width ΔΘTtA, determining the ratio β=ΔΘTA, where β≥0.01 indicates an angular coordinate-extended target and β<0.01 indicates an angular coordinate-point target. To realise this method, the device has a scanning unit which is mechanically connected to an antenna and the detection channel has series-connected intermediate frequency amplifier, an antenna beam width ΘA measuring device for generating a signal proportional to the antenna beam width ΘT, a subtractor for generating a signal proportional to the value ΔΘTtA, a divider for generating a signal proportional to the ratio β=ΔΘTA and a threshold device, where the input of the intermediate frequency amplifier is connected to the output of a mixer, while the first and second outputs of the threshold device are outputs of the detection channel, respectively, for an angular coordinate-extended target for β≥0.01 and an angular coordinate-point target for β<0.01.
