FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to control traffic on roads, to monitor speed infringements by vehicles moving in heavy traffic, with unique tying of the value of the measured speed to the vehicle. According to the disclosed method, video frames with an image of the vehicle registration plate (VRP) are taken when the vehicle moves in the control zone of the video camera and parametres of the position of the video camera relative the plane of the road are additionally measured. Coordinates of points at the corners and centre of the VRP are measured in the coordinate system of the video frame at the beginning and the end of the control zone and the direction of movement of the VRP is determined in the coordinate system of the road on points at the centre of the VRP at the beginning and at the end of the control zone. Further, the displacement value of the point at the VRP in a plane parallel to the plane of the road, lying at the height of displacement of the point at the centre of the VRP, is determined. The vehicle speed is determined from the said displacement value and time over which the said displacement was made.

EFFECT: method simplifies and lowers the cost of the system since there is need for only one type of equipment - video camera - for identifying the number and for measuring vehicle speed.
