FIELD: test and measurement equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to test and measurement equipment, specifically to methods for determining vehicle speed. To calibrate, method includes passing a test vehicle with known constant speed through a control zone. Recording video frames obtained during passage through control zone of video camera. Time of occurrence of video frames is measured, coordinates of centre and width of vehicle registration plate (VRP) in video frames in pixels are calculated. Method includes calculating and obtaining calibration dependence in system of coordinates of road surface and width of VRP from coordinates of centre of VRP in system of coordinates of video frame. For unknown vehicle, all video frames with an image of VRP are recorded. Based on results of measuring coordinates of centre and width of VRP at all video frames in pixels and calibration dependence, speed of unknown vehicle is calculated.

EFFECT: simplified measurement and high accuracy of measuring velocity.
