FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: plane layered medium is probed with a signal using an aperture transceiving antenna. Signals reflected from the plane layered medium are received. The background signal reflected from the aperture transceiving antenna and the antenna and feeder transmission line is measured first in an anechoic chamber. Differential signals are normalised to a pre-measured transfer function of the aperture transceiving antenna. The target function is then determined and minimised. The probing signal used is a short-pulse wide-band signal. The tangential component of the electric field vector or the tangential component of the magnetic field strength vector is pre-measured in the aperture plane of the aperture transceiving antenna. Signals reflected from the plane layered medium are received when the aperture transceiving antenna is placed over the surface of the plane layered medium, and the position of the reception time interval relative the moment the probing signal is emitted excludes reception of signals lying outside that time interval.
EFFECT: high accuracy of determining dielectric and magnetic permittivity, conductivity and thickness of each layer, parameters of the plane layered medium.
