FIELD: engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine operation method consists in supply of charge to combustion chambers of the main and additional cylinders with various diameters, which are connected to each other and in which pistons are arranged, and in compression of charge with pistons in both cylinders. Piston of additional cylinder is delayed as per rotation phase of shaft from piston of the main cylinder of up to 120 degrees, and when piston of the main cylinder reaches its upper dead point when larger portion of charge is in additional cylinder, charge is boosted with piston of additional cylinder. Mixture is pressed by piston of the main cylinder, but it is not brought to self-ignition, thus it is prepared for further quick ignition; and compressed homogenised fuel-air mixture is boosted with piston of additional cylinder, and its temperature and pressure in combustion chamber is brought to compression self-ignition of mixture.
EFFECT: simpler design, possibility of control and regulation of self-ignition moment of homogenised fuel-air mixture, lower specific fuel flow and higher ecologic characteristics of the engine.
