FIELD: measurement equipment.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to the sphere of metallurgy. The method includes attachment of an electromagnet coil (9) to a part of a crystalliser wall (1) at both sides of the proposed level of melted metal (5). The coil is energised with electrical current of frequency from 10 Hz to 200 Hz, and the coil impedance is measured. By comparison of the coil (9) impedance values with predetermined values that characterise the appropriate level of metal in the crystalliser (1), values of liquid steel level in the crystalliser (1) are produced. To determine a reactive component of the coil (9) impedance, phase shift is measured between voltage and current in the coil (9). The device comprises a flat transmitting electromagnet coil, which also serves as a receiving coil, and a facility of recording, comparison and identification, which ensure comparison of the reactive component of the coil (9) impedance with values included into the previously created database.
EFFECT: higher accuracy of measurement.
