FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: in order to realise the method, azo dyes are oxidised with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a Fe/Al catalyst - montmorillonite, intercalated with a mixed iron/aluminium complex containing iron and aluminium ions in ratio 1/10 mol/mol. Oxidation of azo dyes is preferably carried out at pH 3.5-5.7, where hydrogen peroxide is taken in amount of 100% of the stoichiometrically required amount for complete oxidation of azo dyes.

EFFECT: invention provides cheap, easy-to-implement and ecologically clean method of cleaning contaminated water containing azo dyes while reducing specific consumption of oxidising agent and high degree of purification.
