SUBSTANCE: invention discloses a liquid-crystal panel 11 and an illumination device 12. The liquid-crystal panel 11 has a layer 50 of liquid crystals between a pair of glass substrates 31 and 41. The illumination device 12 illuminates the liquid-crystal panel 11. An empty section 63 with external communication is formed in the glass substrate 31 between the pair of glass substrates 31 and 41 on an area which can block light on areas X where brightness point defects occur, which is a possible reason for brightness point defects. The empty section 63 with external communication has an empty part 61 which is formed in the glass substrate 31, and a through-part which runs from the empty part 61 through the opposite surface of the glass substrate 31 from the layer 50 of liquid crystals. The layer 60 for blocking light is formed in the empty section 63 with external communication.

EFFECT: high image quality.
