FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: method involves creating a stratified data base on a cartographic base, which includes spatial and semantic parts consisting of complex layers of different scales tied to each other, each of which is a map of one scale, and a topologic layer which is in form of a graph structure, the location of which corresponds to the spatial location of point, linear and areal objects of the railroad sections with description of their properties and relationships between them. The apparatus includes a satellite radio-navigation system connected by a satellite communication channel to a navigation signal receiver, whose output is connected through a unit for converting satellite signals to railroad coordinates to a section selection unit.
EFFECT: high reliability and information content of a geoinformation data base, which enables to optimise different railroad control tasks by rapidly taking into account changes in situations at railroad sections.
