FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: optical system has a light-transmitting substrate, having at least one surface and edges, a display light source, an optical element for input of light lying on said substrate such that light waves from said display are transmitted by said optical element for input of light into said substrate via total internal reflection; at least one polarising beam splitter on said substrate, at least one reflecting optical element and at least one retardation plate. The retardation plate lies between at least part of the surface of the substrate and said reflecting optical element. The polarising beam splitter reflects light waves entering the substrate to the reflecting optical element. In two versions, the optical system can have a second light-transmitting substrate lying near the first substrate and having at least two surfaces which are parallel to each other, a second optical element for input of light into the substrate via internal reflection, at least one partially reflecting surface on said substrate, whose surface is not parallel to the surfaces of the second substrate.
EFFECT: improved lens.
