SUBSTANCE: optical system includes a light-transmitting substrate having at least two major surfaces and edges, an optical prism having at least a first, a second and a third surface for coupling of light waves into the substrate while ensuring total internal reflection, at least one partially reflecting surface located in the substrate, where partially reflecting surface is oriented non-parallel with respect to the major surfaces of said substrate, for coupling light waves out of the substrate, at least one of the edges of the substrate is inclined at an oblique angle with respect to the major surfaces, the second surface of the prism is adjacent to the inclined edge of the substrate, and the part of the substrate located near the inclined edge is substantially transparent. System is designed so that the light waves enter the prism through the first surface of the prism, pass through the prism without reflection and enter the substrate through the inclined edge.
EFFECT: invention provides improved image quality, wider field of view.
