FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method is based on irradiating the probed volume of space with pulsed scanning radiation, picking up the energy reflected from the face of the subject at reference and measurement wavelengths, comparing said energy values and making a decision based on the comparison results on the presence or absence of the substance of interest in the field of vision of the optical system, wherein at the beginning, when determining the direction of the probed subject, radiation is generated at wavelengths 1.2 mcm and 1.08 mcm the local reflection maximum and minimum of melanin in human skin, energy of the reflected radiation at each wavelength is accumulated, from the comparison result of which a pulse for the dwell time of the human face in the field of vision of the optical system is generated, and then over the duration of said pulse, optical radiation pulses are generated in the established direction at alcohol vapour absorption wavelengths (measurement) and reference thereto; synchronously with the generated pulses, energy of radiation reflected from the face of the subject is summed up on the reference and measurement channels; the formed sums are used to determine concentration of alcohol in the exhaled air, and when said concentration exceeds a standard level, a decision on further action is taken, and at the end of the pulse of the presence of the face in the field of vision of the optical system, the level of alcohol concentration recorded at that moment is entered into a data base.
