FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing granular metallic iron. Method comprises steps of agglomerating a mixture comprising an iron oxide-containing material and a carbonaceous reducing agent, loading the resulting agglomerate in the hearth of a furnace and heat said agglomerate, thereby reducing the iron oxide in the agglomerate, and melting the reduced iron by additional heating to cause consolidation of the reduced iron. When the agglomerate is heated in the hearth of the heating furnace, the relation between the mass ratio (mass%) of the volatile substance contained in the carbonaceous reducing agent and the average flow rate (m/s) of the atmospheric gas in the heating furnace satisfies the following formula: mass ratio of the volatile matter ≤-4.62 × average gas flow rate +46.7.
EFFECT: invention increases the yield of granular metallic iron and reduces production time.
