SUBSTANCE: fiber optic current sensor with SPUN fiber with high birefringence contains a light source that generates light in the wavelength range, a first linear polarizer that receives light from the light source and forms polarized light. In this case, the phase plate receives light from the first linear polarizer and has a phase delay ρ=n 90°+ε, where n is an integer. In addition, the current sensor comprises a measuring spun fiber wound N times to form a loop placed around the current carrier, the spun fiber has a Verde V constant. Also, the device includes a detector unit configured to determine a phase shift Δφ between two polarized modes of light returning from said measuring fiber, and with the possibility of generating a signal indicative of mentioned current.
